Quidditch Pitch, Hogwarts
The Quidditch Pitch is past the Black Lake and is one of the more remote places on Hogwarts grounds. Unless teams are practicing or a game is taking place, the Pitch is not open to students without a teacher present. There is one game a month between the four House teams, meaning each house plays three games a year. There are seven starting players on each Quidditch team: one Keeper, three Chasers, two Beaters, and one Seeker. There are also reserve players, though some years there may not be enough people to have reserves (see 1991 when Harry Potter was unconscious after his second encounter with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, and the Gryffindor Lions had to forfeit defeat to the Slytherin Serpents).
The pitch is a large stadium built in the Greek tradition, likely concurrent with the invention of the game of quidditch in 1050 C.E. in Queerditch Marsh, the location of the first recorded game. The founding of Hogwarts is considered to be around the same time or perhaps 100 years earlier in the 900s. Regardless, the quidditch pitch at Hogwarts is as old as the original building itself, a fact that cannot be said for everything on the grounds.
