Hagrid’s First Class Back

You gazed at the slender black horse, equally captivated and terrified.
‘Hagrid,’ you said, finally breaking your stare, ‘what’re those?’
‘Well, they’re - Thestrals... Wasn’ expectin’ yer’ to be seeing them, if I’m hones’.’ He said.
‘Thestrals...’ You repeated quietly, not really listening to Hagrid, returning back to the skeleton horse. ‘Look at it’s bones,’ you said to Ron, who was looking at you. ‘Look!’ you pointed.
‘Yeah, er - I can’t see them, Hagrid,’ You screwed your face up, and then laughed.
‘But they’re right there,’ you pointed again, glancing between Ron and the Thestrals.
‘I can’t,’ Hermione said in a small voice, and other murmers in agreement from the class could be heard.
‘Alrigh’, put yer’ hands up if you can see ‘em.’ Hagrid said, raising his own hand. Yours shot up, and you looked around. Neville and Harry both had their hands up. You gave a small gulp, and let your hand fall back down to your side.
‘Why is it we can see them?’ You asked Hagrid as the class began to talk amongst themselves, Lavender squealing as a Thestral brushed her arm.
‘Apparently, only the most dim-witted morons can see them,’ Malfoy said in a hiss as he passed you, knocking your shoulder as he did so. Hagrid hadn’t caught this, turning around just as Malfoy shot you an evil glare.
‘Death, I’m ‘fraid,’ Hagrid huffed, wincing.
‘Death?’
‘Yer, only thems who’ve seen death can see ‘em,’ Hagrid gave you a pitying look, then turned back to the Thestrals. You looked at them thoughtfully, your heart feeling almost slower.
